World War II lasted from September 1, 1939 -- September 2, 1945, while the Cold War began shortly after in 1947. As World War II came to a close, Europe and the United States knew that wasn't going to be the end of the prolonged fighting. The Cold War began as rising tensions grew between the Soviet Union and the other allies.
